Week 02 — Paul Tergeist joins the passenger roster, and a marsupial friend is on the way
This week, the biggest change was how much more personality the deck started to have. Paul Tergeist is a space ghost — not the superhero, though — who enjoys funky tunes and heavy bass lines. Barrba’s opossum is also being set up, and its appetite for space dishes will surely cause some havoc when Barrba is panicking.
What changed
- Paul Tergeist has joined the passenger roster, giving the ship a more memorable new face and galactic funky vibes.
- Barrba’s opossum is now being wired into the panic behavior, which should make future passenger reactions feel more distinctive and chaotic in a good way.
- The dirt visuals were also cleaned up: the brown stain that looked like a bowel accident was removed from the dirt setup, so the mess passengers create now feels less gross while still being intentionally annoying and messy.
Best moment
The most fun part of this week was seeing how much more personality the ship started to feel just from adding a couple of very specific details. Paul Tergeist immediately gives the passenger roster a stronger identity, and the opossum setup hints at the kind of chaotic, funny situations that could show up once Barrba is under pressure.
Behind the scenes
The main challenge here was not just adding new character art, but making sure the new systems and visual cues fit the game’s tone. The dirt cleanup was a small visual change, but it mattered a lot because the mess is supposed to be annoying, not off-putting. That balance is what keeps the ship feeling lived-in instead of just messy for the sake of it.
Next week
- Wrap up Barrba’s panic system, with the opossum roaming the ship and devouring kitchen supplies like a true Martian trash panda.
- Finish Paul’s panic behavior, where he pulls a boombox from his pocket and starts dancing, distracting everyone nearby with the galaxy’s finest funky bass drops.
