Week 12 — Please Don’t Bring a Boombox
Paul’s panic now has a boombox, music, and dance moves, giving his captive audience something to stare at while their needs keep dropping.
What changed
- Paul’s performance is ready. Last week introduced his ability to enthrall nearby passengers. This week added the presentation: he pulls out a boombox and starts dancing, with music and new animations for his audience.
- The whole journey counts. Passenger payments now depend on their average mood throughout the trip. Keeping someone comfortable along the way matters more than making them happy just before arrival. The end-of-trip screen shows each passenger’s average mood alongside their payment.
- More capacity means a bigger fuel bill. Fuel costs now scale with the ship’s passenger capacity, adding an ongoing expense to expansion. Passenger base payments also received a balance adjustment.
- Running out of money has a proper ending. If you cannot afford fuel for even the shortest trip, a game-over screen shows your final statistics and lets you return to the title screen. Starting a new game resets statistics and challenges.
- A few stubborn problems are gone. Barrba now gets out of his seat before chasing his escaped opossum, retiring last week’s invisible-chair routine. The captain also resumes tidying partially made beds, and stations no longer remain unavailable after a slide interrupts a task.
Best moment
Picture Paul starting his performance while Barrba is trying to recover his escaped opossum. Barrba can become part of the audience, and the opossum can break into a dance after finishing its escape.
The captain still has a ship to run. Meals, beds, and repairs have not disappeared from the to-do list, and the passengers’ needs keep falling while Paul holds their attention.
It is a wonderfully inconvenient time for onboard entertainment.
Behind the scenes
The game now records more of what happens during a session: passenger activity, captain tasks, equipment trouble, trip finances, and challenge progress.
These records should make it easier to investigate bugs and understand how a trip went wrong. The options menu also includes a toggle for telemetry.
Next week
- Improve the existing ship upgrades.
- Add an in-game menu that opens when pressing Esc.
